More than a half a century has passed since Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial calling for freedom and equality -- and the fight for social justice appears to be far from over. Signaling his commitment to quickly confront climate change, President-elect Joe Biden is planning to move within days to quash the controversial multibillion-dollar Keystone XL pipeline, according to two individuals familiar with the decision who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it had not been announced yet. The politically symbolic pipeline, promoted by the oil and gas industry since it was first proposed about 15 years ago, has drawn opposition because it would carry tar sands, or heavy bitumen, from the boreal forests of northern Alberta, Canada, to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast. The energy used in extracting these molasses-like petroleum supplies would contribute heavily to climate change. The move is one of a flurry of environmental actions Biden plans to take after being sworn into office Wednesday. Read more at the link in our bio. (Photo: Al Nash/Bureau of Land Management via AP)

The 20-foot-tall blimp depicting outgoing President Trump as a diaper-clad baby will be displayed in the Museum of London alongside other remnants of public protests. The blimp was created ahead of the President’s first visit to the UK in 2018, when hundreds of thousands of Britons protested his presence in the country. Since then, it has followed Trump on his trips around the world, appearing in Washington DC and at several rallies and international tours. (📸: Getty Images)

As he leaves office, Mike Pompeo has been titled by a number of officials and analysts as the worst secretary of state in American history. That will come back to haunt him as he considers running for president in 2024 or seeking another elected office. https://t.co/Vilpt6N7Y5

President Donald Trump is preparing to issue around 100 pardons and commutations on his final full day in office Tuesday, according to three people familiar with the matter, a major batch of clemency actions that includes white collar criminals, high-profile rappers and others but — as of now — is not expected to include Trump himself. The White House held a meeting on Sunday to finalize the list of pardons, two sources said. Initially, two major batches had been ready to roll out, one at the end of last week and one on Tuesday. Now, officials expect the last batch to be the only one -- unless Trump decides at the last minute to grant pardons to controversial allies, members of his family or himself.
