Instead of charging two women with shoplifting when store security said they didn't scan everything they were taking at self-checkout, Police Officer Matt Lima bought a $250 gift card for the women, so they could buy their groceries at a different store. https://t.co/gmFJ28lt08

When Matt Goodman turned 21, he wished his father could have been there to celebrate with him. Little did he know that his dad, who had passed away six years earlier from esophageal cancer, had already made plans to attend — not in person, but in spirit. John Goodman left his son a $10 bill to buy his first beer, a secret his mom and sister kept from him all those years. On December 6, the Taunton, Massachusetts, resident used the money to have his first legal drink. "Knowing that he thought about a future big moment in my life meant everything, because even being gone he still did whatever he could to make my 21st birthday," Goodman told CNN. "It was probably the best present I've ever gotten." Tap the link in our bio to learn more. (📸: Samantha Folan)

emcdowell's peppermint brownies are the perfect post-holiday treat.⁣ ⁣ These crowd-pleasing sweets start with a dense, chewy brownie that’s topped with a layer of creamy peppermint filling, dark chocolate glaze and a sprinkle of crushed peppermints. For the cleanest slices, chill the finished brownies thoroughly, then use a warm knife to slice them. Dip the knife blade into hot water and wipe it dry with a kitchen towel between each cut, and you’ll be rewarded with clean layers of chocolate, peppermint and glaze. ⁣ ⁣ Tap the link in our bio for the full recipe from nytcooking. More than 2,000 partygoers rang in the new year at an illegal rave in the Brittany region in France, despite ongoing coronavirus restrictions and a national curfew that has been in place since December 15. “In the early evening of December 31, several hundred vehicles began to converge on an industrial area in the town of Lieuron to set up a rave party,” the local officials said Friday. According to a statement, local police attempted to shut down the rave, but “faced violent hostility.” Police said a “police vehicle was set on fire, three other vehicles were damaged, and soldiers were sprayed with bottles and stones, causing minor injuries.” (📸: JEAN-FRANCOIS MONIER/AFP via Getty Images)

Scientists say they've come up with a way for future Mars explorers to create their own oxygen. NASA is testing a system dubbed "MOXIE," or Mars Oxygen in Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, which will convert carbon dioxide — which makes up 96% of the gas in the red planet's atmosphere — into oxygen. Scientists at Washington University in St. Louis now say they may have come up with another technique that could complement MOXIE — using salty water that lies beneath the Martian as a way to create oxygen.
